Craft

Nandana involves wax and mud resist dyeing process with 18 steps. The technique is used to print thick and heavy-duty cotton fabric with limited colors and motifs. Nandana is an ancient craft of Madhya Pradesh and is one of the very few crafts being practiced in its original form. The fabric thus printed is then worn by the women from the local Bhil tribes as their traditional attire. But what sets Nandana prints apart from the other printed fabrics is its intact rustic look and ancient motifs, equally revered by the contemporaries. The craftsmen use naturally derived dyes on chaste cotton fabric and age-old block designs inspired from nature.

Our Efforts

The craft persons belonged to the Chippa community of Tarapur. With the gradual reduction of these artisans who are directly engaged in the craft, today there are about 125 – 150 families who are connected with Nandana in Tarapur and Ummedpura clusters. Out of this, 50 to 60 families are still actively practicing the craft with 150 dedicated artisans. To save the Nandana craft from extinction and rebuild the livelihoods of the artisans who have depended on it for ages, efforts should be followed with up skilling and creating entrepreneurship support systems. We are very much obliged to the source by bringing this ancient art to you.

Color Care

Most people have experienced the characteristic fading or bleeding of the indigo fabric, as seen on their kurtas or favorite Saree. Why does indigo printing tend to bleed or fade? Well, this is primarily because indigo will not actually form a chemical bond with the fabric into which it is dyed. It ends up becoming insoluble again when put into water. By reacting with air, it tends to get accumulated in the tiny spaces within the fiber. With the passage of time, the rubbing of the fibers causes some of the blue dye to wear off and this creates faded lines.
